As we know that there are many, many bacteria and fungi around us but before the COVID pandemic Mucormycosis did not attack us why? And why COVID patients have more chance of getting Mucormycosis? To know these read the article completely you will get clear information about these topics.

 

What is Mucormycosis?

Actually, Zygomycosis was later named Mucormycosis. generally, Mucormycosis is called a Black fungus.

Mucormycosis is a rare and deadly fungal infection. 

What are the causes of Mucormycosis?

We know that disease can cause by fungus, bacteria, and viruses. For example, COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 Virus.

Mucormycosis is generally caused by Rhizopus species, Mucor species, Rhizomucor species.

Generally, fungi are present in soil and decaying organic matter.

Fungi and bacteria are called decomposers because they decompose dead and decaying organic matter.

 

Why before COVID pandemic Mucormycosis did not attacked us why? And why COVID patients have more chance of getting Mucormycosis?

 

Generally, there are million and million fungi, bacteria, and viruses around us but our immune system has the power to defeat them.

Actually, Mucormycosis also there before the COVID pandemic. If it enters our body our immune system has the power to defeat them. But After getting COVID and recovered our immune system doesn’t have that much power.

 

So, this is the reason why COVID patients have more chance of getting Mucormycosis.

 

What are the Types of Mucormycosis based on the location it present?

 

There are 5 types of Mucormycosis that are:

Ø Rhino cerebral Mucormycosis

Ø Pulmonary Mucormycosis

Ø Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis

Ø Cutaneous Mucormycosis

Ø Disseminated Mucormycosis

 

Rhino cerebral Mucormycosis:

Rhino cerebral Mucormycosis at the upper jaw


Rhino cerebral Mucormycosis is a type of Mucormycosis affects the Sinuses, Nasal cavity, and brain.

Symptoms of Rhino cerebral Mucormycosis; one-sided face swelling, Headache, Nasal or sinus congestion, black spots inside the mouth at upper jaw, and Fever.

 

Pulmonary Mucormycosis:

Pulmonary Mucormycosis is a type of Mucormycosis that affects the Lungs.

Symptoms of Pulmonary Mucormycosis is Fever, shortness of breath, and cough.

 

 

Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis:

Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis is a type of Mucormycosis that affects the digestive system.

Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis is nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain.

 

Cutaneous Mucormycosis:

Cutaneous Mucormycosis
 

Cutaneous Mucormycosis is a type of Mucormycosis that affects the skin.

Symptoms of Cutaneous Mucormycosis is,  the infected area turns black and we can observe ulcers and blisters on the skin.

 

Disseminated Mucormycosis:

Disseminated Mucormycosis  is a type of Mucormycosis  and deadly among all other types of Mucormycosis because Disseminated Mucormycosis travels through the blood and it may affect many organs in our body.


What is the treatment for Mucormycosis?

Presently, doctors are giving anti-fungal drugs for Mucormycosis patients. For example; Amphotericin-B.

 

How can we prevent Mucormycosis?

As we know that chance getting Mucormycosis is more for recovered COVID patients. So, if we wear the mask, maintain social distance, and wash hands frequently then the chance of getting COVID will decrease, and automatically chance of getting Mucormycosis will also decrease.
